Name: Witch Hazel
Scientific name: Hamamelis virginiana
Summary: Famous because of its astringent
virtues and anti-inflammatory. Besides, it favors circulation.
Description: Shrub with oval leaves.
Environment and culture: Native from North America, it was spread in Europe.
Used parts : Leaves, barks.
Constituents: Tanins, flavonoïdes,
bitter principles, essential oil
History: Traditional rremedy for
Indians from North America, it was popularized in Europe by colonists in the
XVIII-th century.
Manners: Protect the skin against
the inflammations, accelerates healings. Favor blood circulation because of
its vasoconstrictrices and astringent properties (haemorrhoids, varicose veins,
broken veins …). eczema, treats dermites, dermatosis but also.
Effects: astringent, anti-inflammatory,
stop internal and external bleedings.
Preparation: Infusion, decoction (1 teaspoonful in a cup of water at the rate of 2 cups a day), alcoholic tincture.
Directions for use : an alcoholic tincture, a cream either an ointment to varicose veins, otherwise 1 in 2 cups a day.
