Name: Buckthorn
Scientific name: Rhamnus frangula
Other names: Black alder
Summary: A powerful laxative, against constipation.
Description: Shrub broad-leaved trees in the yellow and black berries.
Environment and culture: Buckthorn grows in Europe, but also in a lot
of Mediterranean's region as the Northeast of the USA. When the bark is harvested,
it is stored and dried during one year, in order to increase iits efficiency.
Used parts: Bark
Constituents: anthraquinones, anthrones, anthranols, tanins, flavonoides
Manners: Treat chronic fat constipation, coughs. Buckthorn stimulates bowel's action 8 at 12 o'clock after the ingestion. It is recommended when colon's muscles are all right, or when one produces few bile. It can also lapse against biliaries incapacities, intestinal parasites, but also, haemorrhoids and obesity.
Effects: not irritating laxative, vermifuge.
Warnings: Avoid consuming fresh bark because the action is extremely powerful. If the constipation is provoked by an excessive colon tension, buckthorn can provoke vomits.
Preparation: According to the power of the effect, infusion or decoction followed by a maceration of 6 hours(o'clock). Measure 1 to 3 teaspoonful. Liquid is absorbed at the bedtime and effects occurs the next day.
